Captain Tony Perez, commanding officer of The Salvation Army of High Point, has worked with the organization for 18 years, three of which have been in High Point.
“We have programs to help the community all year round,” said Perez, who has worked for The Salvation Army 18 years. “During the holiday season we provide at least two gifts per family. Usually it's clothes and a toy, and a canned ham for Christmas.” Thanks to partnerships with local businesses, organizations and schools, such as High Point University, The Salvation Army is able to make a lasting impact on the community. “Particularly during these tough economic times, many find themselves without a job and no way to support their family,” said Dr. Don Scarborough, Vice President for Community Relations at HPU. “They Salvation Army is always there doing good things when times are good, and when times are bad.” |
In recent years, HPU has assisted The Salvation Army with donations and organizing countless events to support the organization. Each week, HPU students collect a chapel-service offering that is used to fund the organization’s Angel Tree Project, which provides gifts for children in need.
“They are a foundation for our community, and virtually every community in America,” said Scarborough.
